DALI, KNX, Lutron or Crestron? Choosing a lighting control system
The control system decides how a lighting scheme is experienced every day. Here is how the main platforms differ, and how to choose between them.

A beautiful lighting scheme with poor controls ends up stuck on one setting. Scenes, dimming, sensors and schedules are what let light follow the day — and the platform you choose shapes cost, flexibility and future maintenance.
Open protocols
- DALI / DALI-2 — the international standard for digital lighting control (IEC 62386). Each line addresses up to 64 drivers individually, with groups and scenes. DALI-2 certification adds standardised sensors and push-buttons, so products from different manufacturers work together.
- KNX — an open building-automation standard (ISO/IEC 14543-3) that controls lighting alongside blinds, HVAC and more, from a wide ecosystem of manufacturers.
Integrated ecosystems
- Lutron — renowned for smooth dimming, elegant keypads and reliable wireless systems for residential and hospitality projects.
- Crestron — strong where lighting is one part of a wider integration of AV, shading and building systems.
How to choose
Start with the experience, not the brand: how many scenes each space needs, who uses them, whether daylight and occupancy sensing are required, and who will maintain the system. Then match the platform to the project's scale, integration needs and the local support available. Defining this early, in a written control philosophy, avoids expensive changes once ceilings are closed.
